One of the most important concepts in poker that new players often overlook is position. At MPOID, every Texas Hold'em table rotates the dealer position (marked by the "D" button). Your position relative to the dealer button plays a major role in determining your advantage in any given hand.
Once you have a solid grasp of the basic rules and hand rankings, the next step is to start building your strategic understanding. Here are some fundamental principles that will help you play smarter at the table MPOID:
One of the most common mistakes new players make is playing too many hands. In solid Texas Hold'em play, you should only be playing 15–25% of the hands you're dealt, depending on your position. High pocket pairs (AA, KK, QQ, JJ), strong suited connectors (AKs, AQs) and broadway hands (AK, AQ) are among the best starting hands.
Once the flop is dealt, always ask yourself: what is the strongest possible hand on this board? If the board shows three cards of the same suit, there's a good chance someone has a flush. If four consecutive cards are showing, a straight is very likely. A good player MPOID always assesses the range of possible hands an opponent could hold before making any betting decision.
Pot odds are the ratio between the size of the pot and the amount you need to call. If the pot contains RM100 and you need to call RM20, your pot odds are 5:1. Compare this against your probability of completing your hand – if the odds of hitting are better than that ratio, the call is mathematically profitable in the long run.
This is perhaps the hardest thing for new players to do – folding a hand that "looks strong" when there are clear signs the opponent holds a better one. A pair of Aces is certainly powerful pre-flop, but if the board shows a flush and your opponent bets big, it may be time to consider folding. Knowing when to fold is precisely what separates an average poker player from a truly skilled one.
